Making the Invisible, Visible: The Benefits of Air Curtains

It’s difficult to recognize the benefits of an upgrade you can’t see. That’s often the challenge with air curtain systems.

While air curtains work behind the scenes, their impact is clear. From repelling unwanted contaminants and reducing costs to protecting produce, enhancing indoor air quality (IAQ), improving safety, and sanitizing areas, air curtains quietly support healthier spaces across commercial environments.

One of the key advantages of an air curtain is its ability to repel flying insects. Bugs are always looking for a way inside, but no one wants them there. Air curtains help maintain a controlled indoor environment, free from flying pests, to keep employees and customers happy.

Air curtains create a chemical-free, energy efficient controlled wall of moving air that separates indoor and outdoor elements. Its vectorial effect means that air flow pushes insects away from the door opening and back outside.

Another invisible benefit of air curtains is their high-efficiency thermal control. The technology utilizes a high-velocity airstream to create a continuous aerodynamic barrier across an opening and directs the air to maintain a strict separation of environments. This results in superior temperature stability and near-zero thermal loss, even in high-traffic openings.

Mars Air Curtains provide a critical line of defense in extending the shelf life of perishable items. While some of the 300,000 known species of mold are harmless, many are primary drivers of food spoilage and respiratory irritation. To combat this, Mars Air offers an integrated UV sanitization option that provides a continuous disinfection cycle that operates even after the door is closed. In controlled studies, produce and surfaces protected by these UV-equipped air curtains remained free of visible mold growth, while those in untreated environments presented substantial contamination. While the UV technology may be invisible, the resulting food safety and product longevity are undeniable.

Indoor air quality is another primary area where air curtains deliver a measurable impact. The system provides a barrier to deflect airborne contaminants and aerosols from entering a building. When combined with UV and ionizer technologies, the system actively neutralizes pathogens and reduces the concentration of suspended particulates that might be present. According to data presented at the ASHRAE Winter Conference, air curtains can reduce particulate infiltration by as much as 54% to ensure a cleaner, safer and breathable environment.

Although an invisible force, air curtains provide numerous powerful benefits that shape the experience of everyone who walks through your doors.
